Lay Buddhists Who Have Taken Eight Precepts Leading Chanting and Giving Panca Sila (Five Precepts)

In BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) Lay Buddhists who have received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu are able to lead chanting and give Panca Sila (Five Precepts). This is explained in the booklet Requirements and Ceremonies.

“Requirements for formally requesting the Ajivatthamaka Sila from a Senior Bhikkhu of the Maha Sangha

If no Bhikkhu, Bhikkhuni or Ayya is present, the most senior Lay Buddhist who has taken the Ajivatthamaka Silamay give the Five Precepts to lay people at any Buddhist meeting. (Seniority is determined according to the Theravada convention.) They must wear white, cream or beige clothes and also the sash which was presented to them by their Preceptor. These symbols help identify them as someone who has been authorised by the Maha Sangha to give the Five Precepts to lay people.”

The Lay Buddhist who has received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu, who is leading the meeting says recite the Homage. The other Lay Buddhists recite the Homage.

TISARANA (THE THREE REFUGES)

The Lay Buddhist who has received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu, who is leading the meeting recites each line one at a time. The other Lay Buddhists recite the line one at a time after the Lay Buddhist who has received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu.

The Lay Buddhist who has received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu, who is leading the meeting recites each Precept one at a time. The Lay Buddhists taking Five Precepts recite each Precept one at a time after the Lay Buddhist giving The Precepts.

AJIVATTHAMAKA SILA (THE EIGHT PRECEPTS WITH RIGHT LIVELIHOOD AS THE EIGHTH)

The Lay Buddhist who has received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu, who is leading the meeting and other Lay Buddhists who have received the Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu recite the Eight Precepts in Pali together.

End of the Meeting Mangalas (Blessings)

The Lay Buddhist who has received Eight Precepts from a Senior Bhikkhu, who is leading the meeting, recites Mangalas (Blessings) in Pali at the end of the meeting. If they wish to do so they can also recite these in English.
