December 2009
Keswick Buddhist Group was founded on 4th December 1989, and is the oldest Theravada Buddhist Group in Cumbria. The 20th anniversary of the group was celebrated at a joint celebration in Keswick with BGKT on Wednesday 2 December 2009. BGKT and the Keswick Group attended Carlisle Buddhist Group (Theravada) on Thursday 3 December to celebrate the 20th anniversary.

KWMMG Event KWMMG Kendal Women’s Multifaith Meditation Group met on Monday 16 November in the afternoon and evening to celebrate Inter Faith Week.
SLIF event. SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum ran a meeting on Tuesday 17 November evening at the Kendal Quaker Meeting House.

BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) and Keswick Buddhist Group (Theravada) attended the Sutta Study Day at Harnham Ratanagiri Buddhist Monastery in Northumberland, on 8 November.

Two lay teachers from Manchester led a day retreat for BGKT at Fellside Centre on Sunday 4 October.

Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasîlî attended the enthronement of Rt Rev James Newcombe as the Bishop of Carlisle, at Carlisle Cathedral on 10th October.

BGKT celebrated the 10th anniversary of the first visit of Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Maha Thera (Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Oldham) to BGKT on 9 October 1999. Venerable Piyatissa is the Preceptor of some attendees of BGKT.

A meeting (Chaired by the Mayor of Kendal Councillor John Bateson) was held on 15 September 2009 at Kendal Fire Station for religious representatives and local agencies. Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasîlî and Duncan Fisher Upasaka Dhammika from BGKT helped. Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Maha Thera (Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Oldham) participated.
Venerable Piyatissa Maha Thera, a Sufi and BGKT visited the Mayor’s Parlour Kendal Town Hall at the invitation of the Mayor of Kendal Councillor John Bateson.
Sacred texts and religious books were donated to Mayor Bateson for use by the citizens of Kendal and for use in the Kendal and Barrow Hospital Chaplaincies. This event was covered by Cumbria’s Green Handbook (Winter 2009), The Lakeland Echo (6th October 2009), Local Choice Magazine: Lakes Edition (November, 2009), The Westmorland Gazette (1st October 2009).

On the evening of 14 September at Fellside Centre Kendal, BGKT entertained Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Manchester to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his first visit to BGKT on 9 October 1999.

Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasîlî led a meditation and gave a talk at the Sakyadhita UK (International Association of Buddhist Women) meeting at Fellside Centre Kendal, on 18 July.

BGKT Secretary Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasîlî walked in the Civic Procession for Mayor’s Sunday in Kendal, and attended the Parish Church Service and the celebrations in the Mayor’s Parlour in Kendal Town Hall, on 5 July.
