KWMMG Event KWMMG Kendal Women’s Multifaith Meditation Group met on Friday 26 November to celebrate Inter Faith Week.

SLIF event. SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum ran a meeting on Compassion on Thursday 25 November evening in Kendal at the URC United Reformed Church Hall.

RC Presbytery in Windermere Event. Monsignor Francis Slattery’s Meditation Group met on Wednesday 24 November at the RC Presbytery in Windermere. They read the readings from the CIF event on Saturday 20 November. BGKT read the Buddhist reading.

CIF Cumbria Interfaith Forum Event. CIF Cumbria Interfaith Forum presented an excellent Indonesian evening at Carlisle Cathedral on Saturday 20 November to mark the start of Inter Faith Week. Representatives of the Indonesian Embassy attended. There were performances of Indonesian gamelon music and Indonesian dancing. BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) was represented by Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili.

We live happily indeed,
not hating those who hate us!

BGKT attended the Kathina celebration at Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Manchester, led By Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Abbot of Ketumati on Sunday 7 November. Duncan Fisher Upasaka Dhammika chanted the Mangala Sutta (The Discourse on Blessings).

Upasika Sumana was presented with a Certificate for Observing the Panca Sila (Five Precepts) at Ketumati Buddhist Vihara’s Katina celebrations in Oldham on 7 November. The presentation was made by Venerable Siyabalapitiye Buddharakkhita Thero from Sri Buddharakkhita Bhikkhu Puhunu Dharmayathanaya in Anuradhapura Sri Lanka.

Venerable Venerable Siyabalapitiye Buddharakkhita Thero from Sri Buddharakkhita Bhikkhu Puhunu Dharmayathanaya in Anuradhapura Sri Lanka and Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Head of Ketumatui Buddhsit Vihara Manchester spent the weekend of 25 and 26 september in Kendal. On Saturday 25 they visited Ambleside. On Sunday 26 they led an all day session for BGKT and Keswick Buddhist Group at Fellside Centre Kendal.

Upasaka Jotima who founded Keswick Buddhist Group (Theravada) was presented with a Certificate for Observing the Panca Sila (Five Precepts) at BGKT on 26 September. The presentation was made by Venerable Siyabalapitiye Buddharakkhita Thero from Sri Buddharakkhita Bhikkhu Puhunu Dharmayathanaya in Anuradhapura Sri Lanka.

On Sunday 31 July Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa Head of Ketumati Buddhist Vihara Manchester led an all day retreat for BGKT and Keswick Buddhist Group at Fellside Centre Kendal.

During the retreat Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa as the Preceptor gave the Refuges and Panca Sila (Five Precepts) and Buddhist name Sumana to Upasika Sumana.

During the retreat Venerable Pidiville Piyatissa as the Preceptor gave the Buddhist name Jotima to Upasaka Jotima. Upasaka Jotima founded Keswick Buddhist Group (Theravada) ion 4 December 1989. Upasaka Jotima became an Upasaka, took Refuge in the Triple Gem and undertook to observe Panca Sila (The Five Precepts), at Harnham Ratanagiri Buddhist Monastery, Northumberland, on Asalha (Esala) Puja Full Moon Day 22 July 1994.

Kendal Civic Celebration for Mayor’s Sunday led by The Worshipful the Town Mayor Councillor John Veevers on Sunday 4 July 2010, included an invitation from the Mayor to SLIF South Lakeland Interfaith Forum and all the minority faith groups in Kendal, for the first time. Upasaka Sumedha and Jacquetta Gomes (Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili) walked in the Civic Procession from the Town Hall to The Parish Church of the Holy Trinity for the Civic Service. Refreshments were served in the Mayors Parlour in Kendal Town Hall afterwards.

BGKT visited Luang Poh Sudhiro a Bhikkhu from the Thai Forest Tradition in NE Thailand in Manchester, on 1 July. At the Civara Dana ceremony of Sammapatipadarama Monastery on 21 November 2010, a member of the Sangha Supreme Council of Thailand bestowed the title of Phrakhruvinayadhara on Luang Poh Sudhiro in recognition of his outstanding work for the Dhamma [Buddhism]. The prestigious title which emanates from the King of Thailand, is in recognition of one who upholds the vinaya [monastic rules] in an exemplary fashion. There were only 10 holders in the whole Sangha [Community of Buddhist Monks].

MBC MANCHESTER BUDDHIST CONVENTION

BGKT Secretary Jacquetta Gomes represented BGKT at MBC on 19 June. Jacquetta Gomes was invited to speak on a panel as a senior lay person.

The Kendal Town Council Annual General Meeting and Mayor Making Ceremony for Mayor Councillor John Veevers was held in Kendal Town Hall on 9 June.

BGKT Secretary Jacquetta Gomes Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili (Jacquetta Gomes) and John Gerrard Upasaka Sumedha represented BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada).

BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) presented the Mayor of Kendal Councillor John Anthony Bateson with a copper Buddha Rupa(statue) in the Mayor’s Parlour Kendal Town Hall on 28 May 2010.

BGKT’s Vesak celebrations were held on 27 May at Kendal URC United Reformed Church Hall.

Duncan Fisher Upasaka Dhammika of BGKT presented a traditional decorated Vesak lantern to BGKT. He said “Vesak lanterns are very popular in Buddhist countries such as Sri Lanka and Thailand – so I thought it would be nice to try making one “however, I didn’t realise how much work it would require – in fact it has taken 10 months to complete!” The festival of Vesak commemorates the Birth, Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha and so the lantern features illustrated scenes from the life of the Buddha. He added “After much hard work I am pleased with the final result – I hope it serves the group at Vesak for many years to come”.

Upasaka Sumedha, Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili (Jacquetta Gomes) and Upasaka Dhammika from BGKT Buddhist Group of Kendal (Theravada) led the Prayers before the Kendal Town Council Meeting chaired by the Mayor of Kendal, Councillor John Anthony Bateson, on Monday 12th April 2010. They chanted the Metta Sutta in Pali and UpasakaSumedha read it in English. They also presented a wooden Buddha Rupa (statue) to the Mayor, for the Mayor’s Parlour in Kendal Town Hall.

Upasaka Sumedha has taken the Ajivatthamaka Sila (Eight Precepts with Right Livelihood as the Eighth) for Life, Bodhicarini Upasika Jayasili has taken the Bodhicari Precepts and Upasaka Dhammika has taken the Panca Sila (Five Precepts).
